Some like to train with barbells and dumbbells and others like to train with machines. It is not necessarily that one is better than the other. Both have their benefits and both serve their purpose.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Free weights are great because they allow us to train in a functional manner where the strength we develop can be transferable to other aspects of our daily lives. They also are compound in nature and require a lot of core activation which means they have the most potential for gains. -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Machines are much better for isolation of a muscle and strict hypertrophy training. Here are what I'd say to be the best split schedules for trianing 3,4,5 and 6 days a week.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ -⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Regardless of the split you choose, you CAN build muscle as long as you're consistent. In the fitness industry, we know T for its potent body composition affects; reducing body fat mass and increasing lean body mass (Kohn, 2006).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's such a potential muscle builder, that one study showed a 7lb increase in muscle mass after 10wks of a dosage of 600mg. Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) binds to free T, making it unavailable to the body. This makes sense as people who only do calisthenics normally have crazy physiques. INCREASE THE WEIGHT⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Simply keep your reps the same every week, but increase the weight by 2-5%. If you're beginner you can probably do this for a couple of months, before it then becomes time to follow a slower progression scheme.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. INCREASE THE REPS (at the same weight)⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For example, let's say we've someone who can squat 120kg for 3 sets in the 6-8 rep range⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Week 1 - 120kg x 6,6,6⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Week 2 - 120kg x 6,7,7⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Week 3 - 120kg x 8,8,7⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Week 4 - 120kg x 8,8,8⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then, you increase the weight and start building up from the bottom of the rep range again. ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. IMPROVE YOUR FORM⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ An improvement in your form is also a type of progressive overload. Of course, you should never be lifting with dodgy form in the first place, so if your form isn't textbook perfect, this would be the first place to start!⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, if you have been lifting with dodgy form, then improving your form is actually a type of overload, because it is HARDER to perform exercises with good form.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. DECREASE IN RPE⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ RPE stands for 'rating of perceived exertion'.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A 10/10 RPE means you were at muscular failure. Illustration by the talented @pheasyque🤙⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤕To produce the most amount of force as safely as possible, what we want to do is maximise stability in our setup. This can be done by maintaining 3 points of contact with the bench at all times. This allows us to "push through" these 3 points and press with the most efficient form possible. This of course is more of a powerlifting style set up, with the pecs actually at a slight decline. If you need to for certain reasons or think you have to that's up to you and your goals!
